Foose School in Harrisburg was placed into lockdown after the gunshots were heard near the school around 9:10 a.m., the school district says.

The students and staff were sheltered in locked classrooms. Teaching and learning remain in progress.

The area was cleared, the school was not targeted in the shooting, the lockdown has been lifted, although police remained in the area, and the shooter has fled from the scene, police say.

Images of the suspect and the vehicle he was in have been recovered by the police.

"The suspect can be seen driving North on S 13th St in the 1200 Block, he exits the vehicle and fires a few shots into a nearby field," police say,

The then vehicle continued north on South 13th Street, according to a release by the Harrisburg Bureau of police.

The suspect is described as "either a light-skinned or white male clad in a tan coat with grey sweatpants. His dark hair appeared to be tied in a bun." The vehicle is a small grey sedan that appears to be missing its passenger-side rear hubcap, police detail in the release.
